KNOWLEDGE | What is slate? How did slate form?

Slate can be used in roofs, floors, gardens and other places, but also a good decorative stone, natural stone is a variety of, what is slate? Many people don’t know much about this kind of stone. How did slate come into being? Don’t worry. Let’s talk about it. Let’s have a look.

What is slate?

Slate is a kind of metamorphic rock with slate structure and no recrystallization. The original rock is argillaceous, silty or neutral tuff, which can be stripped into thin sheets along the direction of slate. It is formed by slight metamorphism of clayey, silty sedimentary rocks, intermediate-acid tuffaceous rocks and sedimentary tuffaceous rocks.
Because of dehydration, the hardness of the original rock is enhanced, but the mineral composition basically does not recrystallize. It has a metamorphic structure and metamorphic structure, and its appearance is dense and concealed crystallization. The mineral particles are very fine, which is difficult to distinguish by naked eyes. There are often a small amount of sericite and other minerals on the surface of the plate, which makes the surface of the plate slightly silky. Slate can generally be named in detail according to different color impurities, such as black carbonaceous slate and grey green calcareous slate. In low-grade thermal contact metamorphism, shallow metamorphic rocks with spotted and plate structures can be formed, commonly referred to as “spotted rocks”. Slate can be used as building materials and decorative materials. In ancient times, it was commonly used as tile in areas rich in slate.

How did slate form?

Slate, like sandstone, is a sedimentary rock formed by the crustal movement of the earth and the compression and bonding of sand grains and cements (siliceous matter, calcium carbonate, clay, iron oxide, calcium sulfate, etc.) under long-term huge pressure. At present, the main colors are light blue, black, light green, pink, brown, light grey, yellow and so on. Slate is not only rich in texture, but also hard, elegant color, low water absorption, no radiation pollution, with matt, anti-skid, acid and alkali resistance, fire and cold resistance, weathering resistance, good crackability and other characteristics.

The mineral composition is mainly mica, followed by chlorite, quartz, a small amount of pyrite and calcite. The new slate has higher sand content, more calcium and pyrite, and hard lithology. The ore bodies are calcareous sericite and silty sericite with a single layer thickness of 1-5 cm.
The shallow metamorphic rocks are formed by slight metamorphism of clayey, silty sedimentary rocks, intermediate-acid tuffaceous rocks and sedimentary tuffaceous rocks. Black or grey-black. The lithology is compact and the plate cleavage is well developed. There are often a small amount of sericite and other minerals on the surface of the plate, which makes the surface of the plate slightly silky. There was no obvious recrystallization. Microscopically, some mineral grains, such as quartz, sericite and chlorite, are unevenly distributed, but most of them are cryptocrystalline clay minerals and carbonaceous and iron powders. It has redundant structure and spotted structure.
The primary rocks with plate structure are mainly argillaceous rocks, argillaceous siltstone and intermediate-acid tuff. Slate is a low-grade product of regional metamorphism, and its temperature and uniform pressure are not high, which are mainly affected by stress. The lamellar cleavage metamorphic rocks with argillaceous and silty components as the main components and argillaceous and silty components as the main components can be used as building stone, stele and inkstone.
Over the years, many facts have proved that natural stone has become one of the most popular floor materials. They have some potential characteristics and are very suitable for bathroom floor materials. Slate, as a natural stone, its inherent characteristics make it an ideal bathroom floor material.
